Merry Christmas From the Gerken Family
It's so nice of you to visit us on the BooMama Christmas Tour of Homes 2008. Welcome to our little home. It's small and humble, but filled with love...especially this time of year as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Savior...reflecting on the miracle that He came.
Our tree is filled with ornaments that hold special memories of those we love. There are ornaments in memory of our babies in heaven (Faith, Grace, and Thomas) and ornaments made by the boys who fill our house with life. There are homemade ornaments from my mother's tree, nativity ornaments, and ornaments from our first Christmas together. Something to represent all those that we love and hold dear...even a couple Cleveland Browns ornaments are hidden in the mix.
The Willow Tree Nativity Set was given to me by my mother on our last Christmas together before she passed away, after a difficult fourteen-month-long battle with cancer. The cross stitch picture was made by my mom, and given as a gift to my fourth grade teacher (many years ago!). Last year, I worked in that same teacher's classroom with a special needs student. I was missing mom so much, and my former teacher (and now a dear friend) surprised me with the framed cross stitch. What a gift to treasure...something my mother made with her hands. And what a special blessing that the teacher had kept it all these years.
After an unfortunate peanut blossom blunder, we decided to refer to Gerken Baking Day 2008 as the Great Gerken Baking Debacle 2008. A flour fight rejuvenated our spirits, and the baking continued until every last buckeye was dipped, every last reindeer nose was put into place, and a second batch of peanut blossoms turned out just right. Pictured below: Sarah (my sort of step-mother-in-law and annual Gerken Baking Day partner), James, and me... following the flour fight, of course!

Can you ship the peanut blossoms my way?
I haven't made the peanut blossoms yet this year but I love them! =D
I have the same Nativity set (which I didn't end up posting on my blog) but I absolutely love it. It was gifted to me by a relative and therefore is very special also. I'm so sorry to hear about your mom but what a message to connect with through that Nativity set. Amazing.
I hope your family has an absolutely lovely holiday season!
Merry Christmas!

I believe your "peanut blossoms" are the same as what we call "peanut butter kisses" and they are our absolute favorite of all. We go through dozens of them every Christmas.
You have a lovely home. And I believe trees filled with memories are the best kind of all.
I have that same Nativity set, as you know, and I love it.
You have shared and experienced some wonderful memories that brought tears to my eyes.
Merry Christmas to you all!
Thanks for your kind comments on my blog. Your posting brought tears to my eyes because of the cross stitch story. Bless your family at Christmas
Those peanut butter blossoms looks VERY tasty! Thanks for sharing your home! Your tree is beautiful!
Your home looks lovely--and those cookies sure look yummy! Wish I had one right now with my coffee:) Your whole blog is really pretty, too.
Very pretty!
By the way, your blog has a very warm, welcome feel to it.
This is my first visit with you and oh how my heart has been blessed. You have a beautiful home and family, but most of all, as I read some of your posts, I could feel the love of Jesus permeating from every word.
My Mom has been on the heart transplant list now for 2 years. I can sort of relate what you went through with your Mom. Seeing them suffer is so hard. But God is able and He gives us Hope Eternal. Praise Him!
Thanks for sharing God's love!
Merry Christmas!
First off, thanks for sharing the beauty of your Christmas home with us!!
Also, thanks for stopping by our blog & your post! It is such a joy to see people turn thier trials into a avenue to assist others. I believe that every moment of struggle is a stepping stone for further Kingdom building! I also got involved in a IF/ loss ministry, serving on the Board of Hannah's Prayer Ministries! Such a beautiful way to give back & contect with others who UNDERSTAND!
Again, thanks for your comment and I look forward to having a look around your site and learning more about your ministry!
